A Therapist’s Thoughts After the Midterms

One of the things I love about being a therapist is holding space for my clients. I love being present with them, in difficult moments and in exciting moments. I love hearing about their struggles as much as I love hearing about their triumphs because it means a lot to me to be trusted.

Over the last few years, I’ve talked a lot about politics in therapy.

Therapy is inherently political. There’s no way that it can’t be. As a profession, we are here to witness our clients’ struggles, and many of those struggles are in direct relation to what happens in society. It’s influenced by policy, economics, and the general societal zeitgeist.

Therapy cannot fix an issue that is directly caused by policy and that’s an important thing to recognize.

I’ve held a lot of anger and frustration about the way things have gone politically. That anger has been for me as much as it’s been for my clients. So to see the way things have shifted in the midterms, it was like I remembered what it felt like to breathe again.

I’d never felt so much hope and gladness and pride as I did as I watched the polls coming in.

There’s still a lot of work that has to be done. Our elected officials should continue to be held to account. There is still more to be done for our trans siblings. But I am hopeful for the first time in a long time.

I hold so much love in my heart for the deep south, for Texas, for the people in red states who showed up. Many of the cards were stacked against them and they still made themselves heard.

It’s a beautiful thing to see our country come together.

The hard work starts now and there’s still a lot of uncertainty, but we all deserve to take a step back and appreciate the moment.

Hope springs eternal and this was a much needed reminder.
